What is Gumbad Cafe?

Gumbad Cafe is a rooftop restaurant built around a single big asset: its position. It faces Jama Masjid from across the street, so the mosque fills the view from most tables. Outlook Traveller, in a July 2025 list of Delhi restaurants with landmark views, noted that many of the close-up Instagram shots of Jama Masjid are taken from this roof. magicpin also included it in a list of Delhi NCR places to eat with a view.

The space is open to the sky, with wooden flooring tiles and palm trees as decor. Some diners say they can also see Red Fort from the roof. There is very little covered seating, so the weather matters more here than at most cafes.

The cafe is spelled a few ways online: Gumbad Cafe, Gumbad cafe and Cafe Gumbad all refer to the same place in Old Delhi.

Where Gumbad Cafe is and how to reach it

The listed address is 1061, Roof Top, opposite Gate No. 3, Jama Masjid, Dariba Kalan, New Delhi, Delhi 110006. The cafe is inside Hotel Aiwan-e-Shahi. You enter the hotel and take the lift up to the roof.

• By metro: Jama Masjid station on the Violet Line is about 350 m away, a short walk.
• Landmark: Gate No. 3 of Jama Masjid. The hotel is directly opposite.
• Parking: ThePrint reported in 2022 that the cafe offered parking to visitors, which is unusual for Old Delhi. Confirm this on the day, since arrangements can change.

Gumbad Cafe timings

Opening hours are one of the least consistent details online. Here is what each source shows:

No source lists a weekly closed day. The District listing, which also handles table bookings, is the most practical one to trust, but even that can lag behind real changes. Check the app on the day you plan to go.

What is on the menu

The menu mixes Old Delhi Mughlai cooking with cafe staples. ThePrint described the signature drink as the "Senorita" mocktail and said pizza was especially popular. magicpin lists Chicken Kali Mirch as the signature dish.

Diners on various listing sites also name mutton nihari, barra kebab with khamiri roti, fish tikka, mutton seekh kebab, shami kebab, bhuna gosht, a mezze tray, babaganoush, a date shake, veg momos and baklava with ice cream. Outlook Traveller suggested the pesto sandwich and the mutton burger as lighter bites.

A small detail many visitors notice: according to ThePrint, the printed menu is in black and green and carries short notes on the history of Red Fort and Jama Masjid.

How much does a meal cost?

Listing sites and press reports put the cost for two at around Rs 1,200 to 1,500. District and the magicpin store page show Rs 1,200, Outlook Traveller gives Rs 1,300, and one magicpin blog post gave Rs 950. Restaurant Guru shows a much wider spread per person.

Several things are reported by diners but not confirmed by the cafe:

• A minimum spend of about Rs 2,000, mentioned by several diners on magicpin.
• A balcony facing the mosque that one diner said is kept for VIP guests with a Rs 15,000 minimum spend.
• A mandatory 10% service charge, reported by one diner on Restaurant Guru.

Hookah at Gumbad Cafe

Hookah (sheesha) is part of the cafe's identity. ThePrint described it as herbal and tobacco-free, and The Patriot reported that sheesha was the most-ordered item in 2022. Diners often say it is expensive.

Entry rules, crowds and the best time to go

According to ThePrint's 2022 report, families and couples get priority and single men are screened before being let in. Music is paused during namaz times, which makes sense given the cafe looks straight at a working mosque.

Both news reports agree that evenings are the busiest. Most people come for sunset, crowds build from around 8:30 PM, and weekends see long queues. In 2022, Wednesday was described as the slowest day.

The story behind the cafe

Gumbad Cafe opened around July 2022. The Patriot, reporting in October 2022, said it had been running for about three months and quoted manager Nadeem Khan saying he and some friends started it, with the idea born over a sheesha session. ThePrint, in December 2022, named Zainab Bukhari as the owner. The two reports do not fully agree, so this guide treats both as press accounts.

The cafe grew mostly through Instagram. By late 2022 ThePrint reported it was taking 100 to 120 phone calls a day and drawing foreign tourists, YouTubers and influencers. In 2022 The Patriot put its capacity at about 50 to 60 guests and its daily footfall at about 200.

Not everyone welcomed it. ThePrint quoted some Delhi-6 residents who felt locals were turned away, and a heritage walk guide who said its international menu did not match Old Delhi's Mughlai character, while still seeing value for tourism.

What diners say

The cafe has a large online footprint: Justdial shows around 1,850 ratings, Yappe shows 3.6 from about 1,890 reviews, and magicpin shows 3.6 across close to 3,000 online reviews. Smaller samples differ, with Tripadvisor at 4.0 from 9 reviews and District at 2.9 from 30.

The pattern across platforms is consistent. People praise the view and ambience. Complaints focus on price, food quality and slow service. The name is not unique. The Gumbad Cafe in Husainabad, Lucknow, near the Ghanta Ghar clock tower, is a separate business with no known link to the Delhi cafe. It has its own Lucknow page. In Bhopal there is The Gumbad Restaurant in Jahangirabad, which has a different name and is also unrelated.
